Born in Bonn in 1970 to a family of Tanzanian diplomats, Joe Chialo graduated from a Salesian Don Bosco boarding school near Cologne and, after training as a CNC milling cutter, studied history, politics and economics in Erlangen for a few semesters before giving up his studies in favor of a recording contract with Sony Music and a singing career with Blue Manner Haze. His subsequent career in the creative and cultural industries took him to Cologne, Amsterdam, Munich, and finally from Hamburg to Berlin in 2002 with the world’s largest music company, Universal Music.
In 2009, he laid the foundation for today’s Airforce1 Music Group in Berlin to realize his vision of integrated marketing for creatively and conceptually outstanding artists such as Alvaro Soler, Santiano, Ben Zucker and the Kelly Family. Afroforce1, a new music label founded in 2018, serves to expand creative and economic collaboration with countries in Africa. In 2020, he was additionally appointed Executive Vice President A&R Universal Music Central Europe & Africa for Universal Music and has since been responsible for the identification and acquisition of artists from the African cultural region as well as their marketing in Germany and Europe.
In 2016, Joe Chialo joined the CDU and has since been active in the local chapter Bernauer Straße in Berlin-Mitte. He has been a member of the CDU’s federal executive committee since the beginning of 2022. As a member of the Initiative Hauptstadt Berlin, he is committed to Berlin’s tolerant and creative identity. He is married and father of a daughter.
