Why Are You So Worried?
If Pakistan is a hardened mother and Karachi its forsaken daughter, derelict, dilapidated, unloved, and yet with open arms this city embraces every weary traveller to her bosom. This video is a testament to all those feelings one could ever feel about their city – a city which feels like a country – the people all migrants a part of the local diaspora. Pareshaan is a musically turbulent map about a city carved out into a story.
The black scarves serve as a heavy metaphor for shame, the trauma and the heaviness which rises to the surface when you live in an unpredictable, heavily controlled land. These feelings are very close to the day to day emotional realities of our team who created this video. The empty swimming pool, the paint peeling off the apartment towers crammed full of families, searching for something higher than themselves, than their situation, for their identities – battling these entities that have no faith, no face and no name.
